President Truman served as the 33rd President of the United States from 1945-1953. He was a native of Independence MO, and grew up here. And for 12 years, he did quite well as a Missouri farmer. It wasn’t until he went to fight in World War I that he left the community.

After deciding to not run for another term after his presidency, he retired back to Independence MO, where he remained until he died in 1972.

And the 4 public high schools are as follows:

• Truman High School
• Van Horn High School
• William Chrisman High School
• Fort Osage High School

In addition, there is 1 private high school:

• St. Mary’s High School
